Grade 1 winner Rail Trip was a star on the California racing scene. Owned by Jay Em Ess Stable and conditioned by Ron Ellis, he won the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) with Jose Valdivia, Jr. up, ran 2nd to future Old Friends colleague Ball Four in the 2009 Mervyn LeRoy (G2), and finished ahead of both Ball Four and Ukiah in his 2nd in the 2009 Californian Stakes (G2), all at Hollywood Park. But Rail Trip came back in 2010 to win both the California and Mervyn LeRoy, piloted by Rafael Bejarano. After a 2011 campaign in New York, Rail Trip returned to the West Coast to win the San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar, again teamed with Jose Valdivia, Jr. He rounded off that season by overcoming a difficult trip for a strong 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. In all, Rail Trip earned $1,516,520 and won at distances from 1 mile to the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles. Old Friends is grateful to Samantha Siegel of Jay Em Ess Stable for retiring Rail Trip to the star treatment he so much deserves and enjoys at our Kentucky farm. Share sheet info – click here.
