Pimlico to Host Second Running of the Old Friends Race

GEORGETOWN, KY. – May 16, 2024 – This Saturday, May 18, 2024, Pimlico Racecourse will host the second running of the “Old Friends,” an allowance race that will benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement farm in Georgetown, KY. The Old Friends is the 2nd race on Saturday’s undercard of the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1).

The race is part of the “Old Friends for Life” program, where the winner earns the opportunity to receive retirement for life at Old Friends anytime during their lives.

The winner in the inaugural Old Friends was Be Better, a 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo who is scheduled to run in the Pimlico Special (G3) on Friday’s race card.

A field of 10 horses will battle in this year’s Old Friends, a 1-1/16th-mile race on the turf, as they attempt to win the $54,000 purse.

This year there is an impressive list of trainers and jockeys whose horses will participate in the race, including current 8-5 favorite Porquerolles, trained by Graham Motion and ridden by John Velazquez, and 3-1 second choice, Breakwater, a Claude “Shug” McGaughey trainee ridden by Flavien Prat.

The remaining field includes:

* Chelonian, trained by Jamie Ness, ridden by Jamie Rodriguez

* St. John’s, trained by Jack Fisher ridden by Forest Boyce

* Southern Lad, trained by Robert Leaf Jr., ridden by Weston Hamilton

* Midnight Award, trained by Jacinto Solis, ridden by Jamie Torres

* Understudy Kitty, trained by Michael Matz, ridden by Jeiron Barbosa

* Rakia, trained by Horacio De Paz, ridden by Luis Saez

* Desvio, trained by Madison Meyers, ridden by Yomar Orlando Ortiz

* Jolly by Golly, trained by Hamilton Smith, ridden by Victor Carrasco
