The two stallions both arrived at Old Friends in March 2022, along with Dumaani, Swain, Mustanfar, and Albertus Maximus. In addition, another stallion donated by Shadwell Farm, Daaher, arrived at Old Friends on Aug. 16, 2022.

The stallions came to Old Friends following the death of Shadwell Farm’s founder, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in March of 2021. Shadwell then underwent a reorganization and downsizing of operations in both the U.S. and Europe. This restructuring included relocating some stallions and selling a substantial number of its racing and breeding stock.

Old Friends was the beneficiary of Shadwell’s kindness in donating their seven stallions to the farm for their retirement.

“Our Old Friends family is saddened to lose these two Shadwell stallions,” said John Nicholson, Old Friends’ CEO and President. “So many of us had grown exceedingly fond of Intidab and Kayrawan, both of whom led accomplished and well-traveled lives. In their final chapter, they were friendly and engaging ambassadors for Old Friends as well as for Shadwell Farm. Their last years were shining examples of responsible Thoroughbred ownership and aftercare.”

Intidab

He began his six-year racing career as a 2-year old in 1995 in the United Kingdom with two starts at York Racecourse, where he ran in two maiden weight for age races and finished fourth on June 17, and third on Aug. 30.

He got his first win as a 3-year old in 1996 in a maiden weight for age race at Thirsk Racecourse in the United Kingdom on July 26.

Intidab continued to run overseas in Europe, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai until mid-1999. After running in three races that year in Abu Dhabi and Nad Al Sheba, he was shipped to the United States to continue his racing career.

In the United States, he was trained by Kiaran P. McLaughlin, for owner Shadwell Stable, and began to thrive. His biggest wins for them came in the A Phenomenon Handicap (G2) for his first graded- stakes win as a 6-year old in 1999, and the True North Handicap (G2) as a 7-year old in 2000.

Following a second in the Forego Handicap (G2) on Aug. 30, 2000, he was retired, with a record of seven wins, 12 seconds, five thirds, and $531,221 in earnings in 36 starts.

He began his stud career at Shadwell Farm, Kentucky. His top progeny included 20 six figure earners, which included Greater Good, who had six wins in 23 starts, and $546,720 in earnings; and Head Heart Hoof, who had 18 wins in 57 starts, and $509,142 in earnings.

Intidab was pensioned in November 2016, and on March 15, 2022 the 29-year old dark bay stallion was sent to Old Friends for his retirement.

Kayrawan

He began his 15-race career in Europe, and won his first and only start as a 2-year old in 1994 in a maiden weight for age race at Ascot Racecourse in England in on Oct. 7.

It wasn’t until 1996 as a 4-year old that he finally began to hit his stride. In the first three races that year, all at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai, he raced in three Handicaps and won two and finished second in the third.

He was then sent to the United States where he was trained by Kiaran P. McLaughlin, for owner Shadwell Stable. Under McLaughlin he scored his biggest career win that year in the Tom Fool Handicap (G2), the only graded stakes victory of his career.

Three races later he won an allowance race at Keeneland on Oct. 23, and was retired with a record of six wins, two seconds, and $186,682 in earnings in 15 starts.

He began his stud career from 1997-2001 at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky. He then stood at Q6 Ranch in Texas from 2002-2003, and then at Gallagher’s Stud in New York in 2004. He was then sent back to Shadwell Farm in Kentucky.

He was pensioned in April 2012, and on March 2, 2022 the 30-year old bay stallion was sent to Old Friends for his retirement.
