Fashionable pedigrees inspire inflated sales ring prices, but as the Begg family, who bred to race, knew, if you combine the old lines of Man O’War and Tim Tam through Tentam, Sword Dancer and Whirlaway through Lady Pitt, and Buckpasser, you might just get a Victor Cooley. The Canadian 1996 Champion Three Year Old Colt won the Queen’s Plate (G1) at a mile and a quarter, the Marine S (G2)at a mile and a sixteenth, and the Queenston S at seven furlongs, on the Woodbine Dirt. He beat all but Skip Away in the Woodbine Million. As a four year old, Victor headed south to win the 1997 Commonwealth S (G2) at Keeneland and Vosburgh S (G1) at Belmont, and at five the Pelleteri Breeders’ Cup H at the Louisiana Fairgrounds. Victor continued to earn at high levels until his retirement in 2000 with $1,320,475 and 13 firsts 12 seconds and 3 thirds in 39 starts, for Windways Farm and trainer Mark Frostad. Victor returned home to Windways Farm in Ontario until it closed in 2014. Old Friends thanks Jeff Begg and his family for allowing Victor Cooley, along with fellow Grade 1 winner El Brujo, to join the retirees of Old Friends in Kentucky. Share sheet info – click here.
