Saudi Poetry sold as a yearling for $1.7 million to The Thoroughbred Corporation, which raced her for multiple graded stakes wins and $596,972 earnings. Trained by Bob Baffert, she won the Torrey Pine Stakes at Del Mar at three with David Flores up, and at four she took the Louisville Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) and Fleur de Lis (G3), both with Victor Espinoza riding. In 15 starts she attained 5 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third. In 2003, in foal to Silver Deputy, she was sold for $2.2 million to Winstar Farm, and in 2005, in foal to Unbridled’s Song, for $2.0 million to Courtlandt Farm. But none of her ten foals inherited their dam’s talent, and by the time she was twenty her marketplace value had dropped from seven figures to four. That was when Jeff Morris, a former race trainer, and Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand, bought her to secure for her the certainty of a safe retirement. Saudi Poetry lived with Morris at his farm until its sale in 2019 necessitated finding her a new home. Old Friends thanks Jeff Morris and Laura Hillenbrand for entrusting us with the care of this special mare who has so amply earned it. Share sheet info-click here. Donate to sponsor Saudi Poetry.
