River Squall, a son of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall, was bred in Kentucky by F.A. Genter Stable. Sold to Thomas M. Carey, he went into training with Peter Vestel, whose trainees also include Williamstown and Ide. After wins at Saratoga, Keeneland and elsewhere, the dark brown colt joined the elite of racing with his win in the 1997 Saranac Stakes (G3)on the turf at Saratoga with jockey Craig Perret. His other most noteworthy victory came in the 1997 Hawthorne Derby (G3) with Perret, his regular jockey, again in the irons. In his 20 races, River Squall achieved 6 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third for $376,305 career earnings. He entered stud in Texas in 1999 and sired 95 foals, including stakes winners Pretty Squall, Rapid Squall, and Dancing Squall. Old Friends thanks Dr. William Day, who donated River Squall along with A P Valentine, to our retirement facility. Both horses returned to their native Kentucky for Valentine’s Day, 2018.
