Nicanor was foaled March 15, 2006, while his full brother, Barbaro, was on the Kentucky Derby trail. Like his famous brother, he raced as a homebred for Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables and for Most of his career was trained by Michael Matz. Nicanor’s first win came as a three year old at 1 1/16 mile on the turf at Delaware Park. Rosie Napravnik rode him in that race and the next, a win at 1 1/8 mile on the Delaware turf. His other two wins, also on the grass—his sire, Dynaformer, was one of the greatest turf sires of his era—came at four, at Delaware with Jose Valdivia up, and at Belmont with jockey Ramon Dominguez. In his last two starts he was conditioned by trainer Leigh Delacour. Nicanor retired from racing multiple stakes placed with 18 starts, 4 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, and $147,697. After five years’ stud duty at Shamrock Farm, Maryland he was pensioned in the spring of 2018. Old Friends warmly thanks the Jacksons for enabling Nicanor’s retirement with us.
