New Jersey-bred Joey P. was the hero of Monmouth Park, a tough runner who won stakes races as often as most horses eat hay. He competed as a homebred for John Petrini, usually teamed up with jockey Joe Bravo. Trained by Frank Costa in 2005, Joey P. won the Jersey Shore Breeders’ Cup H (G3), the Friendly Lover H, and the Meadowlands’ Rutgers S. In 2006 he entered the barn of Benjamin W. Perkins, Jr., who trained him through the rest of his career. Joey P. took three renewals of Monmouth’s John H. Reilly H in 2006, 2008 and 2009, the 2006 Longfellows S, repeated his Friendly Lover H victory in 2007, and won the 2007 Decathlon S and Colts Neck S. He also won the 2007 Eillo S at the Meadowlands with Alan Garcia aboard. In 2008, with Travis Dunkelberger riding, he won the Charles Town Dash. The feisty gelding continued to earn through the age of nine, when he retired with $1,081,167 career earnings in 48 starts, most of them stakes races, with18 wins, 10 seconds and 1 third. What a horse!
