Texas-bred sprinter Ivan Fallunovalot ran well against modest competition as a three-year-old. At four, claimed for $25,000 by trainer W. T. (Tom) Howard for owner Lewis E. Matthews, Jr., he won the David M. Vance Sprint Stakes at Remington Park. At five he took the King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn, a second David M. Vance Sprint, and the Remington Park Sprint, and competed in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. At six he won the King Cotton Stakes, his third David M. Vance Sprint, and the Frank J. de Francis Memorial Dash (G3) at Laurel Park with his jockey Calvin Borel. At seven he achieved an outstanding fourth win in a row in the David M. Vance Sprint. On March 10, 2018, the day Ivan ran a game third to Whitmore in Oaklawn’s Hot Springs Stakes, his trainer Tom Howard died from complications of cancer. Ivan raced once more, trained by Kathleen Howard, and retired with 17 wins, 6 seconds and 2 thirds—a phenomenal 78%—of 32 starts, and $1,010,903 earnings.
